Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. As a result, “Reading Week” is an annual event that schools, libraries, and families enjoy across the country (an initiative on reading creativity by the National Education Association).
Last year our school enjoyed celebrating Mo Willems, a beloved American, writer, illustrator, animator, voice actor, and creator of children’s books. His pigeon character is often considered this decade’s best picture book characters and several of our school families love his early reader book series Elephant and Piggie.
The 2020 Reading Week from March 2nd – 6th featured author Eric Carle. A successful week of events were coordinated by Mrs. Jorgensen (1st Grade Teacher), Mrs. Boleak (student teacher in 1st Grade), and Mr. Shultz (3rd Grade). He is best known for the picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has been translated into 66 different languages.
The fun-filled week of events included the following:
Monday | Mrs. Bucsko reading one of his books to the students at Robin Hall and classroom door decorating for K-4th Grade began
Tuesday | STEM/STEAM day inspired by the featured author
Wednesday | Students choose one color to dress in for school
Thursday | Buddy Reading on Thursday (Kindergarten with 4th Grade, 1st Grade with 3rd Grade, and 2nd with Preschool)
Friday | Dress as your favorite book character along with the classroom door showcase
With the evolving situation of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), our school is doing everything we can to continue to serve our students/families while ensuring that we protect the health of our staff, students, and community as a whole. We recognize that nothing can replace an in-person school time, but families appreciated the option to collect homework packets on Monday and enjoy frequent teacher emails, activities, and updates.
Our very own magnetic Markell Hall librarian is reading one book a day for our students to encourage a love of books (one picture book and one chapter book)! Below are some of Mrs. Samuel’s picture book readings (published for children ages 4 to 8 years old, and typically includes delightful illustrations):
Mrs. Samuel is reading daily part of the chapter book “Bunnicula” for our older students. It’s a silly, scary book about a vampire bunny.
