On April 20, Andre M., Bruno M., Christian L., Alice L., and Odin O. traveled to Pasco for the 2018 Washington State Elementary Chess Championship. The busy weekend started Friday evening with a Bughouse Tournament, in which Andre & Odin, Bruno & Alice, and Christian & Nathan (not an SPA student) played as teams. Parents were allowed in the room, and it was a lot of fun for all to be part of this exciting fast-paced tournament!

The state competition started at 9 am on Saturday. It was fierce with over 1,200 players from all over the state. Each student played 5 rounds, and although there was some disappointment at times, St. Paul’s students performed well.

Unfortunately, our students could not officially compete as a team because they did not meet the minimum number of players required. Nonetheless, Andre and Odin earned individually 3-win trophies. Overall, the group had a great day competing in chess and playing together in the sunshine during breaks!

Odin, Christian, Andre, Alice, and Bruno invite all students who play chess to give local tournaments a try in the next season! The goal is to have a St. Paul’s Knights Team of at least 5 kids in the 2019 State Championship! The competing team also hopes to see many of St. Paul’s kids at our own Bughouse Tournament at Markell Hall on Saturday, April 28, to celebrate together a successful year! Go Knights!

The Bughouse Tournament is perfect for those who feel a bit shy competing as kids play with a partner: https://knightschess.wordpress.com
