As we transition into Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday and Tuesday of next week, it is fun to look back at the beginning of the year. Naturally, at conferences there will be personalized conversations about student academic growth and areas of support, but part of the dialogue with parents/guardians will be discussing a student’s social/emotional progress. We are so thankful that our small class sizes allow us to give intentional insights about each child.
Social-emotional learning is emphasized in our program at St. Paul’s Academy as our students navigate what it means to get along with others, contribute to our school, and think of the community beyond our own walls. In addition to establishing our class patterns and expectations in 2nd grade, one of our initial class activities was taking time to think about our school’s Core Commitments. Most importantly these were discussions about what these commitments meant to each individual student and how they are lived out and applied through actions. As a class we brainstormed what it meant to Engage, Reflect, Create, and Care. Each student wrote a thought and drew a picture for all four Core Commitments.
Our student’s ended the activity with presenting to each other on our shared Core Commitments.
