Fifth grade students became advocates for native plants and balance within ecosystems during their investigation of invasive species. The “Alien Invaders Project” included research about a Washington State invasive species and creation of an informational pamphlet about the species. Students focused on why the species is considered invasive in the current ecosystem and what actions people are taking to offset the negative impacts of the species.
Laurel Baldwin, coordinator for the Whatcom County Noxious Weed program, visited the class in the morning and shared samples of invasive plants found right in our own backyard! The students then took a walk around school grounds and to nearby Peabody Park to identify other invasive species and to discuss the effects they may have on the neighborhood ecosystem.
