On Saturday, January 12, Franklin Knights won first place in the Lowell Chess Tournament! The Knights scored 19 points (out of 25), ahead of the second place team, Wade King (with 16.5 points), and the third place team, Assumption (15 points). Team standings were calculated by adding the top 5 individual scores for each school.

The Knights players at the Lowell Tournament were Christian L., Andre M., Bruno M., Maxwell D., Odin O., Jacob G., Gabe H., Andrew B., Anabelle B., Keoni O., Mateo C., and Veronica J. The largest competing team in many years!

Individually, Christian was the champion of the 4-5 grade section, with an impressive 4 wins and 1 draw! Maxwell also struck 4 wins and 1 draw, including a victory against one of the strongest chess players in Whatcom County! Andrew placed second in the K-1 section, and Mateo C. placed 4th in the 2-3 section. Odin, Bruno and Gabe earned state qualification medals with 3 wins, and first-time competitor Veronica J. received a recognition medal. The Knights warmly welcome Veronica as a member of the competing team!

In 5 rounds of matches, the Knights created solutions to problems posed by their opponents– a true opportunity to practice life skills! Our Knights celebrated the championship with satisfaction, and the first place plaque will be displayed this week at the front desk of the Lower School and next week in the Middle School.

The Knights Team highly encourages new players to join state qualifying tournaments. It is clear that this season’s new players have been challenged and then delighted in their growth and wins! The next state qualifying tournament will be held at Wade King Elementary on February 2. Go Knights!!
