He is a recognized community leader and public speaker with expertise on topics of poverty, effective charity, addiction, behavioral health, sex ethics, the problem of evil, and the Bible. As an 11-year veteran of homeless ministry and Executive Director of Lighthouse Mission Ministries (LMM) in Bellingham, Hans works to end the cycle of homelessness in the lives of men, women, and children in Whatcom County. LMM provides three nutritious meals per day, safe 24-hour shelter (currently averaging 230 people a night); access to life skills classes, referrals, case management, recovery programs and spiritual support–healing and connection cultivating total life transformation. LMM is partnering with the City of Bellingham to build an additional easy-access shelter to accommodate 200 more people experiencing homelessness.

As a fourth generation Bellinghamster, Hans studied business at Western Washington University and theology at Regent College, Vancouver. He has toured the world, worked in the tech industry and is an award winning filmmaker. He is married with a five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

For St. Paul’s Academy ENGAGE is one of our school Core Commitments.

I will Engage means…Embrace life with its joys and frustrations. Connect with family, friends, classmates, colleagues, and people around the world. Tackle problems and challenges – intellectual, practical, spiritual, and social. Discipline yourself, knowing that accomplishment and academic rigor require resilience and persistence. Act upon your convictions with courage and with kindness. Embrace leadership opportunities of all kinds.

The other commitments are REFLECT, CREATE, and CARE.
