On Friday, June 2nd, St. Paul’s Academy presented The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet by Peter Bloedel. It was enjoyable to see so much of our school community come to an evening performance to support our students who have been hard at work preparing since April.
After eight weeks of rehearsal, design, and creation, the cast and crew of St. Paul’s Drama were proud to perform. With six mostly middle school student actors playing over 20 roles, this play was no simple undertaking. I was thankful to lead this first every school drama performance with fellow faculty member Maria Lugo. This was designed intentionally to be a very student-driven production. It was amazing to see students work together to design and create costumes that could accommodate very swift changes, design and build set pieces that could bear weight and be moved easily, and even use graphic design skills to create the show’s advertising materials. Faculty cameos added additional pizzazz to this already silly play, and, as you’ll see in the video, the entire thing was in Dr. Seuss-like rhyme!
Here are a few clips of the play preformed at Markell Hall:
There was time after the performance for the audience to ask the actors questions. It was so enjoyable to hear the explanation from our students and to witness the ownership of their experience:
