This past summer, all incoming and returning middle school students had an opportunity to either strengthen their current math skills in a prep program or take a complete math course. This program has been offered two years in a row, free of charge. The Franklin Academy funded the cost of the IXL software as part of the school’s commitment to becoming a STEM school.

For students wanting to strengthen their mathematical skills, it required about 15 hours of work during the summer, whereas taking a complete course involved at least 100 hours of course work.

Whether a student selected to strengthen their skills in the prep program or move up a grade level, they had support. Amazingly, over the summer, every Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. from June 22nd to August 24th, about 20-30 students came to the Markell Hall commons area to see their friends and were ready to work. Naturally, our families had activities during the summer, so students came when they were available and were provided “breaks” so they would not be overwhelmed.

As a result, the middle school math department is pleased to announce the following breakdown for our students regarding our middle school math program coming into the 2019-20 academic year:

Students at or below grade level        17 %

Students one year above grade level     30 %

Students two years above grade level    50 %

Students three years above grade level   3 %

The students at or below grade level are in super small classes. One has six students, and the other has nine showing The Franklin Academy commitment to helping students succeed. For example, five 6th grade students that were below grade level last year, are now one year above grade level.

These results are exciting to share, and our summer program is unique to our independent school.
