On Saturday, December 1, Franklin’s Knights Chess Team was the champion of the Assumption Holiday Classic Tournament, with 14 points. Team standings were calculated by adding the top 4 individual scores for each school. In a very close competition for 2nd place, both Wade King Elementary and Assumption Catholic School earned 12.5 points, and the score of a 5th player was used to break the tie. Assumption placed 2nd, and Wade King third. The Knights competitors were Christian L., Andre M., Bruno M., Maxwell D., Odin O., Jacob G., Gabriel H., Andrew B., Anabelle B., and Keoni O.

Individually, Bruno and Maxwell won 3rd place in their respective sections (K-2 and 3-5 grade). Christian earned 5th in the 3-5 grade section, with 4 wins out of 5 games! Andre earned a state qualification medal with 3 wins, and first-time competitor Gabe received a recognition medal. Welcome to competing in tournaments, Gabe!

All Knights finished the tournament and were absolutely proud to hold the beautiful 1st place team trophy. The trophy will be displayed this week at the front desk of the Lower School *trophy display pending approval.

Between rounds, our Knights had fun playing tag and “flippy chess” (a 2-player bughouse chess invented by a fellow player from Lowell). Chess parents at the tournament were content to watch kids practice a few life skills through the game of chess.

We look forward to continuing a solid team and performance throughout the season. The next state qualifying tournament will be held at Lowell Elementary on January 12. Go Knights!!
