The 5th Annual Whatcom County Science and Engineering Fair will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at St. Paul’s Academy’s Markell Hall, 1509 East Victor Street, Bellingham, Washington from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fair will be “Open to the Pubic for Viewing” from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m and have an “Awards Ceremony” from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m.

St. Paul’s Academy has organized a regional fair to provide Whatcom County students in grades K-12 the opportunity to participate in a local juried event.  Students can submit a project in general fair or select to follow the Intel International Science Fair (ISEF) standards prior to the 60th Annual Washington State Science and Engineering Fair (WSSEF is March 31st and April 1, 2017). For more information regarding the state fair go to their direct link: http://wssef.org/registration/.

All participants will have their projects reviewed by various volunteer judges.  The fair will be open to entrants interested in submitting both science and engineering projects. Younger students might consider projects as simple as building a paper airplane and recording the distance thrown; building a boat out of 15 straws, tape, and 1ft x 1ft of cellophane and see which can hold the most pennies while staying afloat; or constructing a tower out of Legos. The goal for engineering projects is to recognize a need and build a device or design a system to solve a problem.

Students interested in following the scientific method or planning to enter the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair are encouraged to follow the rules established by the Intel International Science Fair (ISEF). Each entrant may select a category from among the following: Animal Sciences, Astronomy, Behavioral Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Energy, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematical Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Physics and Plant Sciences.

Information and project ideas will be made available on the St. Paul’s Academy website (http://whatcomcountysciencefair.com/registration/). All entrants will receive a t-shirt, certificate, medal, and opportunity for awards.  Students must submit a complete Registration Form by the following dates: Early Registration of $15 by Friday, February 24th at 4 p.m. and Final Registration of $20 by Friday, March 3rd at 4 p.m.

For more information, registration forms and/or to help judge or sponsor this year’s event, contact Science Fair Coordinator Theresa Wines: or (360) 733-1750 and you will be transferred to her voicemail.
